Background: THERE WERE SCUFFLES WITH POLICE WHEN ABOUT 6,000 DEMONSTRATORS STAGED A THREE-MILE "MARCH OF SHAME" THROUGH LONDON STREETS TO TRAFALGAR SQUARE TODAY (SUNDAY) TO PROTEST AGAINST THE VIETNAM CONFLICT. AMONG THEM WAS A 57-YEAR-OLD GRANDMOTHER IN REGAL ROBES WHO ADDRESSED THE TRAFALGAR SQUARE RALLY AS "THE QUEEN".

THE DEMONSTRATION WAS ORGANISED BY THE COMMITTEE OF 100 - A PACIFIST ORGANISATION. PLACARDS DENOUNCED THE VIETNAM CONFLICT OR EXPRESSED SUPPORT FOR IT MOCKINGLY, EXPRESSED SHAME FOR THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT'S SUPPORT OF THE UNITED STATES POLICY IN VIETNAM, AND FOR THE UNITED STATES, AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND ACTION IN VIETNAM.

POLICE FROM OUTER LONDON AREAS WERE DRAFTED IN TO CONTROL THE MARCH, AND TWO MEN AND A WOMAN WERE ARRESTED. BUT THE RALLY IN TRAFALGAR SQUARE WAS AN ORDERLY AFFAIR. IN ADDITION TO THE WOMAN POSING AS "THE QUEEN", THERE WERE SPEAKERS IMPERSONATING MR. HAROLD WILSON, THE PRIME MINISTER, AND MR.GEORGE BROWN, THE FOREIGN SECRETARY.

THE ROLE OF "THE QUEEN" WAS TAKEN BY MRS. KATLEEN FARR, WHO HAD EARLIER ANNOUNCED HER INTENTION OF IMPERSONATING QUEEN ELIZABETH. HOWEVER, FOLLOWING WARNINGS FROM THE POLICY THAT IT MIGHT CAUSE TROUBLE, SHE WAS INTRODUCED TO THE RALLY AS "QUEEN KATHY" INSTEAD.

THE SPEAKERS, IN THEIR VARIOUS ROLES OF IMPERSONATION, "CONFESSED" TO HAVING BEEN WRONG IN NOT DENOUNCING THE VIETNAM CONFLICT AND FOREIGN INTERVENTION. "GEORGE BROWN" - AN ACTOR - PROMISED TO CONDEMN THE BOMBING OF NORTH VIETNAM ONCE HE BECAME PRIME MINISTER.

"THE QUEEN" DECLARED: "AS THE ARCH SYMBOL OF ENGLISH PROPRIETY I HAVE SET THE SEAL OF OFFICIAL RESPECTABILITY ON THE WICKED OBSCENITY OF THIS WAR". SMALL CONTINGENTS AGAINST THE MAIN DEMONSTRATION SHOUTED "COMMUNIST TRAITORS" AND "COMMUNIST SCUM".
