WASHINGTON CEREMONIES HIGHLIGHTED RESPECTS BY THE AMERICAN NATION YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) FOR THE LATE PRESIDENT JOHN KENNEDY. HIS BROTHER, SENATOR-ELECT ROBERT KENNEDY, ATTENDED MEMORIAL MASS IN ST. MATTHEW'S ROMAN CATHOLIC CATHEDRAL. AND THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE, INCLUDING PRESIDENT JOHNSON'S TWO DAUGHTERS, MOURNED AT THE GRAVE SITE.

IT WAS EXACTLY A YEAR SINCE PRESIDENT KENNEDY WAS ASSASSINATED IN DALLAS, TEXAS. THE ST. MATTHEW'S CATHEDRAL SERVICE WAS ONE OF THOUSANDS OF MEMORIAL SERVICES ACROSS THE NATION. ST, MATTHEW'S WAS THE CHURCH FROM WHICH PRESIDENT KENNEDY WAS BURIED.

THE REVEREND JOHN CAVANAUGH, A FRIEND OF THE KENNEDY FAMILY AND A FORMER PRESIDENT OF NOTRE DAME UNIVERSITY, RECITED THE MASS AND DELIVERED THE SERMON. THE MUSIC INCLUDED THE "NAVY HYMN" AND "FAITH OF OUR FATHERS".

MEANWHILE, THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WERE CLIMBING THE HILL IN ARLINGTON CEMETERY TO OFFER FLOWERS, TO PRAY, AND TO MEDITATE AT HE GRAVE OF THEIR LATE LEADER. IT WAS A FROSTY MORNING, BUT LATER THE SUN CAME OUT TO ADD SOME WARMTH TO AN OTHERWISE MOURNFUL OCCASION. THE ETERNAL FLAME -- LIT BY MRS. JACQUELINE KENNEDY -- BURNED ON.

THE JOHNSON DAUGHTERS WERE JUST TWO OF MORE THAN 7-MILLION PEOPLE WHO HAVE NOW MADE THE PILGRIMAGE TO THE BURIAL SITE.

(MRS. KENNEDY REMAINED IN SECLUSION IN NEW YORK DURING THE DAY.)
