  • Description

In Bangkok on Tuesday night(28 November), Malaysia thwarted the host nation when they edged Thailand 1-nil in the final of the Fifth King's Cup Soccer Championship.

The goal came in the 59th minute of the match when Malaysia's inside right Makhtar Dahari beat the Thai goalkeeper Saravudh Patipakornchai after outstripping the Thai defence.

The move had begun with a long clearance from the Malaysian half.

A capacity crowd of 40,000 had crammed into the stadium to watch the match, but there was only a stunned silence when the only goal of the match was scored.

For Malaysia, the 1972 Olympic qualifiers, it was a triumph of tactics over pace. The Thais continued to play fierce football but the Malaysian team managed to hold their lead until the end of the match.

It was Malaysia's first King's Cup win, and they celebrated in traditional style by parading the cup and team officials around the stadium.
