  • Description

President Anwar Sadat denounced critics of Gamal Abdul Nasser during a speech in commemoration of the fourth anniversary of the death of the late President on Saturday (28 September).

Nasser's policies have come under fire recently during officially-sanctioned discussion on the role of the Arab Socialist Union, the country's cole political organisation.

During his address at a joint meeting of the Central Committee of the Arab Social Union, President Sadat said Nasser's critics bear a grudge against him.

Earlier in the day, senior officers of the Armed Forces visited the late President's tomb. They were led by Field Marshal Ahmed Ismail, the Minister of War, and Lieutenant-General Abdul Ghany el Gamassy, the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces.

El Sayed Mamduh Salem, the Minister of the Interior, and a party of senior police officials visited Nasser's tomb where they laid wreaths.

The late President's wife and family also visited his tomb and greeted the others visitors.

SYNOPSIS: On Saturday, the Mosque of the late Egyptian president -- Gamal Abdul Nasser -- was the scene of a commemoration ceremony on the fourth anniversary of his death.

Among those visiting his tomb were the War Minister and Minister of the Interior who laid commemorative wreaths.

The late President's widow and family also visited the tomb.

A group of senior officers from the Armed Forces paid their respects.

They were led by the Minister of War, Field Marshal Ahmed Isamail. The Minister of the Interior, El Sayed Mamduh Salem led a party of police officials.

The policies of Abdul Nasser have been criticised recently during discussions about the role of Egypt's only political organisation, the Arab Socialist Union.

At an address later in the day, President, Sadat denounced the late President's critics who, he said, were motivated by grudges.

Intellectuals have been particularly critical of Nasser's totalitarian rule and many people have called for a return to a party system, which was abandoned by the late President in 1954.
