  • Description

THE 50,000 TON BRITISH AIRCRAFT CARRIER, EAGLE, STEAMED INTO SINGAPORE YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) AS A MASSIVE COMPLEMENT TO BRITAIN'S ARMED FORCES BUILD-UP IN MALAYSIA. HER PRESENCE IN FAR EASTERN WATERS ADDS CONSIDERABLE POWER TO BRITISH NAVAL FORCES IN THE REGION, NOW AT THEIR STRONGEST SINCE THE KOREAN WAR.

A FEW HOURS BEFORE THE EAGLE BERTHED HER FORCE OF FIGHTER BOMBERS FLEW TO SINGAPORE'S MAIN AIR BASE. THEY'RE TO STAY THERE WHILE THE EAGLE REMAINS IN PORT. IT'S NOT KNOWN HOW MANY PLANES ARE WITH THE CARRIER, BUT THE MAXIMUM COMPLEMENT IS KNOWN TO BE 42 FIXED AND ROTARY WING AIRCRAFT.

EAGLE IS EXPECTED TO STAY IN SINGAPORE FOR SEVERAL DAYS, MAINLY TO EFFECT REPAIRS. DURING THE VOYAGE TO THE FAR EAST, THE CARRIER HAD TO PUT INTO MOMBASSA WHEN SHE DEVELOPED GENERATOR TROUBLE.
