    SIXTY-ONE ROAD TANKERS WERE LOADED ABOARD A SHIP AT APAPA DOCKS IN NIGERIA YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) FOR SHIPMENT TO TANZANIA WHERE THEY WILL JOIN THE COMMONWEALTH OIL SUPPLY OPERATION TO ZAMBIA.

    THE TANKERS - ALL ASSEMBLED IN NIGERIA - ARE BEING SHIPPED FROM APAPA TO DAR-ES-SALAAM ABOARD THE FREIGHTER "SPRINGBANK". THE CAPACITY OF EACH TANKER RANGES FROM TWO THOUSAND TO SIX THOUSAND GALLONS (9000 TO 27,000 LITRES).

    THE OIL OPERATION IS BEING JOINTLY OPERATED BY BRITAIN, CANADA, AND THE UNITED STATES - AND WAS INTRODUCED TO COUNTERACT A RHODESIAN CLAMP-DOWN ON OIL CROSSING HER TERRITORY TO ZAMBIA.

    A SPOKESMAN FOR THE BRITISH HIGH COMMISSION IN LAGOS SAID THAT THE SHIPMENT WAS "A DIRECT RESULT" OF CONSULTATIONS AT THE COMMONWEALTH PRIME MINISTERS' MEETING IN LAGOS LAST MONTH.
