Background: Turkish security authorities have been carrying out extensive searches for the killers of the Israeli consul General, Mr. Ephriam Elrom. Mr. Elrom was kidnapped from his Istanbul flat on May 17th.His body was found in a deserted apartment on Sunday (May 23rd). His hands were tied behind his back and he had been shot in the back of the head. Some 30,000 troops combed Istanbul in the search for Mr. Elrom.
Since then police and troops have detained hundreds of people in the search for the kidnappers and killers. It was not known how many of them were kept in custody.
VISNEWS cameras covering the search in Istanbul recorded the detention of suspects at Kadikey on the Asian side of the Bosphorus.
SYNOPSIS: In Turkey, security forces have continued their search for the killers of the Israeli diplomat, Mr. Ephriam Elrom. Posters showed the photographs of eight men and one woman wanted for the murder. Hundreds of people, including these from this car, were detained by security forces. It was not known how many were held.Reports from Istanbul said nearly 1,000 people had been detained. One of the wanted men has been arrested. He's Nahit Tore, a 24-year-old economic student. He was believed to have been the organiser of the kidnapping. Mr. Elrom was abducted from his Istanbul flat on May 17th. The Peoples Liberation Army, a left-wing organisation, demanded the release of all their members in return for Mr. Elrom's release. Turkish authorities refused. Mr. Elrom's body was found in a deserted apartment on Sunday. His hands were bound behind his back and he'd been shot through the back of the head.
