P.M. Begin joined mourners at Nachalat Yitzhak Cemetery in Tel Aviv in a memorial service?
P.M. Begin joined mourners at Nachalat Yitzhak Cemetery in Tel Aviv in a memorial service to the dead of the "Altalena." An arms ship arriving just after independence, there was disagreement between the Irgun (Begin's group) and the Haganah (regular army forces) as to who should have the weapons. A shell was fired by a Haganah shore battery -- ostensibly as a warning -- but it hit the ship exploding the munitions and killing most of the crew. The questions of who gave the order to fire and whether it was aimed at the ship have never been fully answered and are still the cause of much bitterness between ??? the decedents of the two organisations: Begin's Hirut Party and the Labour Party (Yadin was Dep. Chief of Staff at the time).
