  • Description

The Turkish freighter Aydin, 7715 tons, on the Westerschelde on its way to Germany, came into collision with the French passenger vessel "Charles Tellier", 12,000 tons, on voyage to Antwerp.

The heavier "Charles Tellier" holed the "Aydin". To prevent her sinking, the captain beached her on a sandbank near Rilland-Bath (Zealand). This manoeuvre was only partly successful because only the stern rested on the sand, the bow section being under water for the most part. The vessel was loaded with general cargo, and, it is feared, may be a total loss.

The ship is 15 years old and, much to the surprise of the experts, has already withstood two strong tides, without breaking up. A Belgian salvage company is trying to salvage the ship.
