  • Description

From the Portuguese island colony of Macau, the Chinese Mainland appeared calm after the announcement of the death of Chairman Mao Tse-Tung.

The colony's largely Chinese population immediately lowered all flags on the island to half mast when the news came of the death of the Chinese leader.

Both Chinese and Portuguese flags hung at half mast and many of the shops and stores in the colony closed as a sign of respect for Chairman Mao.

The large fishing fleet operating out of Macau returned to port as news of the Chinese leader's death spread amongst the island's "boat people."
At the Portuguese Government House all flags were lowered and special military ceremonies were held in remembrance of the dead Chinese leader.

Newspapers were sold out within hours. The famed Maoau casinos, however, did not cease work as they have done in the past on the occasions of the death of Portuguese dictator, Oliveira Salazar and Chinese Premier, Cheu En-Lai.
