  • Description

PITTSBURGH, Pa. --- At the Westinghouse Research Laboratories in Pittsburgh, bio-medical engineers have built a machine that doesn't do anything but breathe.

SYNOPSIS: Its official title is a pulmonary simulator. It has the ability to breathe in the atmosphere, warm it and replace it with the same amount of carbon dioxide, nitrogen and water vapor that humans exhale.

It can be used to test life support systems that are being developed for outer space or underseas.

One characteristics different from humans is that it has three lungs, made of rubber.

It's more efficient than a human in one respect though... in that tit can simulate the breathing of one man while at rest... (pause) or during extreme exertion, and can keep going indefinitely.

When being used to test a newly developed life support system it can also be adjusted to simulate the breathing of up to ten men.

Maintenance is relatively simple, and it has the advantage over man and other machines in that it can take a smoke break and keep right on working.
