    THE HEAVIEST RECORDED RAINFALL SINCE 1852 HAS CAUSED WIDESPREAD FLOODING IN FRIESLAND, HOLLAND. THE FLOODS FOLLOW HIGH SEA THAT A WEEK EARLIER HAD ALREADY SWEPT OVER THE POLDERS AND BROKEN DYKES.

    THE RAIN POURED DOWN ON HOLLAND ALL DAY ON FRIDAY AND SOON THE GROUND, ALREADY SATURATED BY WINTER RAINFALL, COULD NOT ABSORB ANY MORE. AS THE WATER BEGAN TO RISE THE PUMPS IN THE COMPLEX CANAL SYSTEM OF THE FRIESLAND, BEGAN TO LOSE THE BATTLE AGAINST THE RISING WATER.

    VAST AREAS OF THE COUNTRY WERE FLOODED AND CATTLE HAD TO BE MOVED TO HIGHER GROUND. THE WATER IS NOW SUBSIDING.
