Background: A strong delegation from the Arab League arrived in the Ivory Coast on Tuesday (26 February) carrying a message for President Felix Houphouet-Boigny. The delegation is on a tour of African nations to discuss a joint response to last month's (February) exchange of ambassadors between Egypt and Israel.
SYNOPSIS: The delegation was received at the Presidential Palace in the Ivory Coast capital, Abidjan. The were led by the United Arab Emirates Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Rached Abdallah. His message to the Ivory Coast leader, President Houphouet-Boigny, was of Arab concern at recent developments in the Middle East.
This was the first visit to the Ivory Coast of a delegation from the Arab League. They have already visited Niamey, Bamako, Dakar and Conakry to co-ordinate Afro-Arab opinion. The League believe the normalisation of diplomatic relations between Egypt and Israel constitutes a danger to Africa. Mr Abdallah, accompanied by delegates from Syria and Algeria, said Zionism, Colonialism and Imperialism had established a permanent base on the African continent in Cairo.
He told reporters that it had been a sad day for the Arab world when the Israeli Embassy opened in Cairo. Israel still occupied Arab territories and the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people had not been restored. The establishment of diplomatic relations between Israel and Egypt would greatly damage the Arab cause. The delegation intends to visit Benin, Sao Tome and Principe before returning home.
