  • Description

Delegates from 23 countries to the 14th. Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East meeting in the Malayan capital, Kuala Lumpur, took time off from their strenuous discussions to attend an historical pageant, held at the Kuala Lumpur Merdeka Stadium.

This Pageant, which is the work of Mr. M.C. Sheppard, keeper of the Public Records, was a display of Malaya's history from 1025 A.D. to 1886 A.D.. It is a fantastic, oriental affair, with dancing girls, kings and exotic dresses.

The pageant has been made to represent four episodes in Malayan history. The first begins with the arrival of traders from China, India and Arabia, and shows the dealings between these various merchants.

The second stage is a flashback to 1477, and the setting is Malacca, the once flourishing port on the west coast of Malaya, which was the spearhead of western occupation of the country, in the 16th. and 17th, centuries. The ruler of the country at that time is depicted mounting his throne and watching a game of Sepak Raja (Malayan football).

Following this display of rich and picturesque dancing and playing is the third episode, centred around the mid-18th. century. This time we see the attempts by Dutch traders to establish a monopoly of the tin trade along the coast.

Finally the capture of Kuala Lumpur by the Malay ruler, Tengku Kudin assisted by Capitan China, appears in the Stadium. The gradual build up of Malaya's modern history is revealed, showing the rebuilding of the city and the arrival of the first train in the Capital.

Several eminent members of the British Commonwealth countries were at the Stadium, included amongst these was Mr. Casey, Australian Foreign Minister, Mr. Nash, Prime Minister of New Zealand, and the Malayan Prime Minister, Tungku Abdul Rahman.
