  • Description

King Paul of Hellenes led October 26, 27, the nation in remembering Greece's refusal to accept a Nazi surrender ultimatum eighteen years ago.

The King accompanied by his younger daughter Princess Irene sailed in the destroyer Polemistis to attend the Te Deum anniversary at St. Demetrius Cathedral, Salonika. At the service were members of the Government, headed by Prime Minister Constantine Karamanlis.

The anniversary is celebrated over three days. The Greeks called it simply "Oxi" (pronounced 'oyshi' for "No.")
The King later drove to Kilkis, near the Bulgarian-Yugoslav border where he distributed gifts to mothers and children.
