The Saba Saba international trade and agriculture fair was opened in the Tanzanian capital of Dar es Salaam on Thursday (2 July).

The fair was started in I964 and this year features exhibits from I2 foreign countries and 50 Tanzanian firms.

The overseas countries participating are: Zambia, Uganda, Syria, Pakistan, India, Britain, Italy, West Germany, the United States, Somalia and Japan.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Tanzanian Minister for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Abdulrahaman Babu, said the fair was established to show what had been achieved in the field of international trade, and to allow overseas buyers to see Tanzanian products.

The ceremonial ribbon opening the fair was cut by Mr. William Kalema, the Ugandan Minister for Commerce and Industry, who complimented the organisers of the fair on its scope and quality.

About I50,000 people are expected to visit the trade fair before it closes on Tuesday (7 July).

Mr. Babu also said that the Tanzanian take-over of the import, export and wholesale trade this year was not aimed at reducing foreign trade. He emphasised that private investment still had an important role to play in the development of the country.
