  • Description

PRESIDENT MAKARIOS ANNOUNCED IN NICOSIA LAST FRIDAY NIGHT (JANUARY 12) THAT CYPRUS PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION WOULD BE HELD ON FEBRUARY 25. THE PRESIDENT ALSO STATED THAT "PACIFICATION MEASURES" - LIFTING ECONOMY RESTRICTION AND ROADSLOCK CHECKS ON TURKISH CYPRIOTS - WOULD APPLY IMMEDIATELY EVERYWHERE ON THE ISLAND EXCEPT IN THE TURKISH CYPRIOT SECTOR OF NICOSIA. EARLY YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) THOUSANDS OF SCHOOL CHILDREN MARCHED ON THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE TO SPEAK TO THE PRESIDENT AND IN FAMAGUSTA, TURKISH CYPRIOTS CROSSED INTO THE GREEK SECTOR OF THE CITY.

THE TURKS HAVE TRADITIONALLY INHABITED THE OLD PART OF THE CITY, WHICH IS BOUNDED BY THE VENETIAN OTHELLO TOWER. WHEN HE PRESIDENT'S "PACIFICATION MEASURES" CAME INTO EFFECT, TURKS WALKED AND DROVE ACROSS INTO THE GREEK PART OF FAMAGUSTA.

IN HIS ANNOUNCEMENT, PRESIDENT MAKARIOS SAID THAT HE WOULD CONTINUE IN OFFICE UNTIL THE NEW ELECTION. HE STATED THAT FAILURE OF THE GREEK-TURKISH DIALOGUE ON CYPRUS LAST YEAR AND THE RECENT WITHDRAWAL OF GREEK ARMY TROOPS FROM THE ISLAND NECESSITATED A "REALISTIC REAPPRAISAL OF THE HANDLING OF THE CYPRUS PROBLEM." THE PRESIDENT SAID HE WANTED TO SETTLE THE UNCERTAINTY AND CONCERN AMONG GREEK CYPRIOTS BUT AT THE SAME TIME GIVE CERTAIN ADDITIONAL PRIVILEGES TO THE TURKISH CYPRIOTS.
