  • Description

The United States Arabian Republic .. the Aswan. The word Aswan forever connected with the construction of the high dam on the Nile, the construction of which was achieved by the Egyptian people with the true assistance of the Soviet Union.

The celebrations dedicated to the historic event of the barring of the bed of the Nile became a real holiday for the people of Egypt.

N.S. Khrushchov, the Chairman of the USSR Council of Ministers, Nasser, the President of the United Arabian Republic and President as-Salal of Yemen are on the board the liner "Ramzes". The first stones with memorable words written on them are thrown into the water. N.S. Khrushchov throws a granite stone. The barring of the great African river has begun.

A rally took place in the marquees' which was constructed on the granite shores. President Abdel Nasser made a speech at the rally. He stated that the Soviet-Arabian friendship became during the years of United labour as strong as the Aswan dam.

N.S Khrushchov stated in his speech that the significance of the Aswan is not only economic. It is also a great moral and political victory, a victory of the working people over the powers of imperialist and colonialism.

The moment of the explosion of the dike is nearing. President Nasser and N.S. Khrushchov together press the button at the control desk.

The dike is blown up! The waters of the Nile stream into the new artificial canal. The barring of the old bed of the Nile is hearing to the end. Already over 70 hours continues the battle of man with the mighty river. Every hour these heavy Soviet trucks and unloading barges throw in the river a thousand cubic meters of stone. The distance between the two shores is growing narrower and narrower. N.S. Khrushchov, President Nasser, President Ben Bella of Algeria and President Aref of Iraq are present at these last moments of the historic barring of the Nile.
