Background: Opponents of Chile's Marxist President, Salvador Allende, were preparing a mass rally in the capital, Santiago, on Monday night (18 June) in support of workers at the giant El Teniente copper mine, who have been on strike for more than two months.

Some 3,000 strikers from the mine, 50 miles (80 kms) south-east of Santiago, came to the capital last week to press their claim for higher pay. In three days of rival demonstrations in the city over the strike, a Brazilian student was killed, dozens of people injured and scores more detained by the police.

The strike by 5,000 of the 12,000 workers at the mine has suspended Chile's vital copper exports. The State copper corporation, Codelco says the mine is still functioning at 70 per cent of its normal rate. The strike has become a focus of political unrest int he country.

Monday's mass rally, led by the opposition Christian Democrat Party, was expected to spark off further political violence. At the same time, Chile's largest labour confederation called for demonstrations and a general strike in support of President Allende's policies.

The funeral of the Brazilian student who was shot dead -- a member of the Movimiento De Izquierde Revolucionaria (MIR) -- was held on Sunday. The coffin was taken from the party headquarters through the city to the cemetery.
