    SOME 1,300 THAI MARINES, PLUS THEIR EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES, BOARDED EIGHT THAI NAVY SHIPS ON SUNDAY AT THE SATTAHIP NAVAL BASE, EAST OF BANGKOK. THEY ARE TAKING PART IN EXERCISE "JUNGLE DRUM III", WHICH WILL LAST FOR TWO WEEKS. IT IS A COMBINED AMPHIBIOUS ASSAULT EXERCISE BEING CONDUCTED BY THAILAND AND THE UNITED STATES.

    THE THAI AND AMERICAN MARINE FORCES RENDEZVOUS IN THE GULF OF THAILAND TODAY (WEDNESDAY). ON SATURDAY THE COMBINED MARINE FORCES, NEARLY 3,000 MEN, WILL ASSAULT THE BEACHES OF SOUTHERN THAILAND IN A DEMONSTRATION WHICH WILL DRAMATISE ONE OF THE MOST COMPLEX OPERATIONS IN MODERN WARFARE.

    ABOUT 40 SHIPS OF THE TWO NAVIES WILL BE INVOLVED IN THE EXERCISE WITH SOME 10,000 NAVAL AND MARINE PERSONNEL TAKING PART.

    EXERCISE "JUNGLE DRUM III" WILL BE UNDER THE OVERALL COMMAND OF REAR ADMIRAL EDWIN MILLER, COMMANDER OF THE CRUISER DESTROYER GROUP OF THE UNITED STATES SEVENTH FLEET, WITH REAR ADMIRAL SATAP KEYANON, OF THE THAI ROYAL NAVY, AS HIS DEPUTY.

    THE EXERCISE IS DESIGNED TO COPE WITH ANY EMERGENCY SITUATION ARISING FROM OPERATION OF AN INSURGENT FORCE IN PENINSULAR THAILAND.
