Background: BRITAIN'S COMMONWEALTH RELATIONS SECRETARY, MR. DUNCAN SANDYS, CURRENTLY ON THE THIRD FINAL STAGE OF AN EAST AFRICAN TOUR, YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) VISITED THE BRITISH MARINE COMMANDOS WHO HAVE BEEN STATIONED IN TANGANYIKA SINCE JANUARY.

THEY WERE CALLED IN TO QUELL THE ARMY MUTINY, AND STAYED ON IN TEMPORARY BARRACKS WHEN THE TANGANYIKAN ARMY WAS DISBANDED.

EARLIER MR. SANDYS HAD MET WITH THE TANGANYIKA PRESIDENT, JULIUS NYERERE, AFTER WHICH IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT THE BRITISH TROOPS WOULD RETURN BY THE END OF THIS MONTH. THEY WOULD BE REPLACED BY "A BATTALION FROM ANOTHER AFRICAN COUNTRY."
MR. SANDYS WAS SHOWN ROUND THE MARINES' TEMPORARY QUARTERS AT THE NATIONAL STADIUM BY COLONEL CARTER. SPEAKING TO THE SOLDIERS HE THANKED THEM FOR DOING "A FINE JOB" ALTHOUGH THEY HADN'T SEEN MUCH ACTION. HE SPOKE OF HIS MEETING WITH PRESIDENT NYERERE AND REITERATED THAT THEY WOULD BE RETURNING BEFORE THE END OF THE MONTH.

TODAY MR. SANDYS FLEW INTO ZANZIBAR FOR A COURTESY CALL ON PRESIDENT ABEID KARUME. HE IS DUE BACK IN LONDON TOMORROW.
