    More than a hundred delegates from 18 countries attended the opening of an International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) Conference in Istanbul on Wednesday (1 March).

    The conference was expected to discuss the problems of international transport, and in particular the problems of the Turkish railways and the security of in-transit goods.

    The conference was scheduled to end on Saturday (4 March).

    SYNOPSIS: Delegates from 18 countries attended the opening session of the International Transport Workers Federation Conference in Istanbul on Wednesday. More than a hundred were present at the opening session heard Turkish railway official, Mr. Alcova, speak on the problems of the security of goods in transit. Workers' conditions on Turkish railways were also discussed.

    The conference -- which was scheduled to last until saturday -- also considered individual transport problems at Wednesday's session. Security was the main point on the agenda, and discussions ranged around all aspects of the safety of goods being transported through Europe and the Middle East -- railways and road transport came under particular scrutiny.
