  • Description

Tempers flared during a vital ice hockey match between the Buffalo Sabres and the Pittsburgh Penguins at Buffalo, New York State in the United States on Sunday (18 February) night.

Sabre's first goal scorer Rene Robert (pronounced Robere) was ejected form the game by referees after he became the third man in a fist fight between team mate Rick Martin and Pittsburgh's Bryan Watson. The fight erupted after Martin was struck on his forehead by an opponent's hockey stick. He later required stitches to close a cut over his left eye.

The Buffalo Sabres went on to win four goals to one to finish three points ahead of Detroit for the final playoff in the East Division of the National Hockey League.
