    SPEECHES, A PROCESSION SHOWING DEVELOPMENT OF THE ORGANISATION OVER THE PAST 100 YEARS, FOLK DANCING AND A NEW CANTATA BY BENJAMIN BRITTEN WERE AMONG THE FESTIVITIES.

    DR.WILLY SPUEHLER, THE SWISS PRESIDENT, AND M.LEOPOLD BOISSIER, PRESIDENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE OF THE RED CROSS, DREW ATTENTION TO THE MAIN PROBLEMS FACING THE RED CROSS TODAY - THE PROTECTION OF VICTIMS OF CIVIL WAR AND WHETHER THE RED CROSS SHOULD INTERVENE AS A NEUTRAL INTERMEDIARY TO PREVENT WAR.

    THEY SPOKE IN A THEATRE ONLY A FEW METRES FROM THE SPOT WHERE REPRESENTATIVES OF 14 GOVERNMENTS AND SEVERAL PHILANTHROPIC SOCIETIES FIRST DREW UP THE PRINCIPLES OF THE RED CROSS.

    LATER, OFFICIALS, GUESTS AND GENEVESE PAID HOMAGE AT THE MEMORIAL TO HENRI DUNANT, THE GENEVA BANKER WHO FOUNDED THE RED CROSS MOVEMENT.

    THOUSANDS OF GENEVESE WATCHED THE PROCESSION WHICH FOLLOWED.IT INCLUDED NURSES DRESSED IN CRINOLINES AND LACE - THE UNIFORMS OF THE EARLIEST DAYS - ABOARD ANCIENT HORSE -DRAWN AMBULANCES, THEN RESCUE HELICOPTERS, SOUP KITCHENS AND FIELD AMBULANCES.

    RED CROSS VOLUNTARY WORKERS IN NURSES UNIFORMS, BOILER SUITS, AND NATIONAL COSTUMES OF MONGOLIA, NEW ZEALAND, FINLAND, TUNISIA, AUSTRIA, AND MANY OTHER COUNTRIES FILED PAST TO THE MUSIC OF DOZENS OF BANDS AND THE CHEERS OF THE CROWDS.
