THE CONFERENCE OPENED ON WEDNESDAY (4 DECEMBER) AND WILL CONTINUE FOR TWO WEEKS. IT WAS LAUNCHED BY GHANA'S COMMISSIONER FOR ECONOMIC AFFAIRS, MR. EMMANUEL OMABOE.

    MR. OMABOE TOLD THE DELEGATES THAT RAISING THE STANDARD OF LIVING OF POOR COUNTRIES WAS THE MOST PRESSING PROBLEM FACING THE WORLD TODAY.

    HE SAID THAT ALTHOUGH THE CURRENT OVERALL DEVELOPMENT RATE OF THE DEVELOPING COUNTRIES APPEARED ENCOURAGING, IT WAS DISAPPOINTING THAT, ON AN INDIVIDUAL BASIS, SOME DEVELOPING STATES APPEARED TO BE STAGNATING, RATHER THAN IMPROVING.

    HE TOLD THE DELEGATES THAT THE INDUSTRIALISED NATIONS' INTEREST IN THE ECONOMIC ADVANCEMENT OF DEVELOPING COUNTRIES APPEARED TO BE WANING.
