Background: AUSTRALIAN POLICE HAVE CORDONED OFF LAKE TOPLITZ - BELIEVED TO HOLD IN ITS DEPTHS A BIG TREASURE TROVE SUNK THERE BY NAZI LEADERS AT THE END OF WORLD WAR TWO. THE LAKE, IN THE AUSTRALIAN PROVINCE OF STYRIA, IS NOW BEING SUBJECTED TO A FULL UNDERWATER SEARCH BY TEAMS USING ECHO-SOUNDING EQUIPMENT. ALL UNAUTHORISED PERSONS ARE BEING KEPT CLEAR OF THE AREA.
TREASURE THOUGHT TO BE DUMPED IN THE LAKE INCLUDES TWO LOTS OF CASES: ONE, SAID TO HAVE SUNK BY OTTO SKORZENY, WARTIME LIBERATOR OF MUSSOLINI, COMPRISING 22 CASES EACH CONTAINING 106 LB (48 KILOGRAMMES) OF GOLD BARS, AND THE OTHER, OF 20 CASES, CONTAINING FORGED BANK OF ENGLAND NOTES WITH A FACE VALUE OF SEVERAL MILLION POUNDS STERLING. THREE YEARS AGO, A WEST GERMAN MAGAZINE TEAM RAISED SOME 15 CASES, RECOVERING FORGED BANK NOTES WITH A FACE VALUE OF GBP9,000,000.
BUT MORE IMPORTANT STILL IS A THIRD LOT OF SPECIAL CONTAINERS HOLDING TOP-SECRET NAZI DOCUMENTS, INCLUDING A FULL LIST OF BANK ACCOUNTS WHICH PROMINENT NAZI LEADERS AND THEIR UNDERLINGS OPENED IN SWISS BANKS IN 1944. THESE ACCOUNTS, VALUED AT OVER 90,000 MILLION AUSTRIAN SCHILLINGS, ARE DUE TO EXPIRE IN 1964, 20 YEARS AFTER THEY WERE OPENED. IF THE MONEY IS NOT CLAIMED BY THEN, THE TOTAL SUM WILL BECOME THE PROPERTY OF THE SWISS BANKS.
WITH TIME FAST RUNNING OUT, SEVERAL FORMER NAZI LEADERS ARE KNOWN TO HAVE SECRETLY INSPECTED THE AREA AROUND THE LAKE IN THE PAST FEW YEARS. EARLIER THIS MONTH, A 19-YEAR-OLD GERMAN STUDENT, ALFRED EGNER, WAS REPORTED TO HAVE DIED WHILE DIVING FOR THE TOPLITZ TREASURE. HIS DEATH IS STILL BEING INVESTIGATED BY AUSTRIAN AND GERMAN POLICE.
