Background: EUROPE IS STILL SHIVERING IN THE GRIP OF ARCTIC WEATHER. STORMS AND BLIZZARDS WHICH HAVE BLANKETED THE CONTINENT ALL WEEK CONTINUED UNABATED TODAY (THURSDAY). SNOWFALLS STRETCHED FROM SWEDEN IN THE NORTH TO SPAIN IN THE SOUTH.

ITALIANS ARE HAVING MORE THAN THEIR SHARE OF THE BLEAK ADVENT TO WINTER. THUNDERSTORMS AND GALES IN THE SOUTH, BLIZZARDS AND FLOODS IN THE CENTRAL AND NORTHERN REGIONS.

IN MILAN, TEMPERATURES ZEROED BELOW FREEZING POINT AS THE WINTER'S FIRST SNOW ARRIVED. IT WAS EVEN COLDER STILL IN GENOA, WHERE FISHERMEN FOUND CONDITIONS TOO BAD TO PUT TO SEA. THE THERMOMETER IN THE AREA FELL TODAY TO MINUS SIX DEGREES FAHRENHEIT (21 DEGREES BELOW ZERO CENTIGRADE.)
MOVING ACROSS COUNTRY TO VENICE, CONDITIONS WERE ALMOST AS BAD, ALTHOUGH NOT SO COLD. CANALS ARE ITS MAIN ATTRACTION, BUT RIGHT NOW VENETIANS ARE SICK OF WATER. HEAVY RAIN HAS FLOODED THE CANALS, SPILLING WATER INTO SQUARES AND STREETS.

BUT MOVING FURTHER EAST TO TRIESTE, NEAR THE YUGOSLAV FRONTIER, THE TEMPERATURE DIVES AGAIN BRINGING MORE SNOW. WINDS OF 60 MILES (100 KMS) AN HOUR HAVE BEEN HOWLING IN FROM THE ADRIATIC TO ADD FURTHER DISCOMFORT.

NO LET-UP IS IN SIGHT - WHICH MEANS ITS ODDS ON FOR A WHITE CHRISTMAS.
