  • Description

SCIENTISTS IN TAIWAN ARE USING THE ATOMIC REACTOR AT THE NATIONAL TSINGHUA UNIVERSITY TO PRODUCE RADIO-ISOTOPES FOR EXPERIMENTS TO IMPROVE RICE PRODUCTION.

WITH THE RADIO-ISOTOPES THE SCIENTISTS AIM AT IMPROVING SEED, CONTROL OF PLANT DISEASES AND ABSORPTION OF FERTILIZERS.

THE NUCLEAR RESEARCH HAS ENABLED THEM TO PRODUCE THREE RICE CROPS A YEAR, CUTTING THE GROWING PERIOD FROM 102 TO 78 DAYS.

THE SCIENTISTS SAY INDIVIDUAL CROPS MAY BE SMALLER BUT THE FASTER-GROWING RICE WILL ENABLE FARMERS TO PLANT CROPS IN BETWEEN THOSE OF RICE.

THEY HAVE FOUND THAT SEEDS TREATED WITH RADIO-ISOTOPES PRODUCE SHORTER PLANTS THAT CAN BETTER WITHSTAND TYPHOONS AND HEAVY RAINS.

IN RECENT YEARS, RICE PRODUCTION IN TAIWAN HAS INCREASED 35 PER CENT TO MORE THAN TWO-MILLION TONS A YEAR. TAIWAN SCIENTISTS ARE ALSO USING RADIO-ACTIVE MATERIALS TO IMPROVE ORANGES, WHEAT, SWEET POTATOES AND PEANUTS.
