    A call for the strengthening of Arab unity was made by the Libyan leader, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi when he spoke to the members of the Arab Socialist Union in Cairo on Thursday (8 February).

    Colonel Gaddafi had been in Cairo for several days for talks with Egypt's President Anwar Sadat and Syria's President Hafez Al-Assad on political and military strategy in the Middle East crisis.

    They wee meeting as the Presidential Council of the Federation of Arab Republics, which links their three countries.

    Colonel Gaddafi told the A.S.U. members, that Arab nationalism did not discriminate between Moslems and Christians. He denounced Marxism for ignoring the vital role of religion and nationalism in building nations throughout the world.

    The principles of the late President Gamal Abdel Nasser, he said, were "landmarks in the history of the Arab nation's struggle."
    Arab nations should respect Nasserism and learn lessions from its principles, he said.

    The visiting leader told the A.S.U., which is Egypt's only political organisation, that attempts to stir up sectarian strife in Egypt would only serve imperialism and enemies of the Arab nation.
