    A COMPANY FROM THE 21ST SOUTH VIETNAMESE RANGER BATTALION RAN INTO A FORTIFIED NORTH VIETNAMESE ARMY POSITION 15 MILES (24 KMS.) SOUTH OF DA NANG ON TUESDAY (4 FEBRUARY). TEN RANGERS WERE KILLED BEFORE THEY WITHDREW, AND HELICOPTERS POUNDED THE NORTH VIETNAMESE POSITION.

    FOR THREE HOURS THE 2ND RANGERS COMPANY FOUGHT TO DISLODGE THE NORTH VIETNAMESE FROM THEIR BUNKER POSITION, BUT THE NORTH VIETNAMESE FOUGHT BACK WITH MACHINE-GUN FIRE AND HAND GRENADES.

    A NUMBER OF CIVILIAN, CAUGHT IN THE BATTLE, WERE FORCED TO SHARE FOX-HOLES WITH RANGERS, TO AVOID THE FLYING ???RAPNEL AND BULLETS THAT RAKED THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE POSITION.

    ORDERED TO WITHDRAW IN THE AFTERNOON, THE RANGERS RETREATED AS HELICOPTERS, CALLED IN TO COVER THEIR WITHDRAWAL, POUNDED THE NORTH VIETNAMESE POSITIONS WITH ROCKETS AND MACHINE-GUN FIRE.

    THE NORTH VIETNAMESE PROVED TOO RESILIENT TO BE MOVED BY THE RANGERS ACTION, SO HEAVY WEAPONS, BOMBS AND ARTILLERY, MAY BE CALLED IN TO MOVE THEM.
