  • Description

Libya's President Muammar Gaddafi said on Sunday (13 May) that seven israeli had been discovered at an oilfield operated by an American company.

Speaking at a five-and-a-half-hour press conference in Tripoli, President Gaddafi described this as a very serious matter and added: "We can sacrifice the oil to stop the Israeli infiltration.

The President named the company as "Oasis", and showed Israeli-produced orange and tomato juice found at the field. He said Israeli passports and health certificates were also available for inspection.

"An end will be put to his...if companies are used for the Israeli infiltration than this is a very serious thing and it puts America in the dock," he declared. Describing the United States attitude as irresponsible, he added "This leaves us to doubt even the American Embassy and to doubt whether the Ambassador is American or Israeli".

President Gaddafi also alleged that a U.S. aircraft carrier had violated Libya territorial waters. He said numerous 'planes took off in a demonstration "to frighten us". The President did not say when the alleged incident took place, but indicated it was recently.

In answering questions from a large number of foreign correspondents, the President also said that the Beirut operation on April 10, in which three Palestinian commando leaders were killed, was according to Libya's information, carried out by the United States.

"The United States has carried out this operation alone while Israel has covered it with propaganda".

On the question of Libya's ownership of French-made Mirage jets, President Gaddafi said that neither Israel nor anybody else in the world has the right to ask Libya for an answer. "We are not accused, and therefore we don't have to justify ourselves".

Israel claimed that between 18 and 20 of the Mirage jets have been sent from Libya to Egypt. France operates an arms embargo to all front-line parties in the Middle East conflict.
