Background: Urban guerrillas staged a daring "wild-west" style raid in the central Argentine industrial city of Cordoba on Saturday night (24 May) to free about 30 women from jail.

The guerrillas fired rockets and started fires about three blocks from the prison to distract the attention of guards and security forces.

This was apparently successful, as the guerrillas then drove a truck up to the jail wall and fastened a rope from it to the iron bars of one of the cell windows. They then drove off, tearing the bars from the wall and the women escaped and fled in the truck.

Many of the escapees were being held on suspicion of belonging to outlawed left-wing groups.
