With the Duke of Edinburgh, Her Majesty the Queen opened the new airport at Gatwick, in Surrey, on Monday June 9th.. This ???7 million passenger airport has been built to take overflow traffic form London Airport, which, by 1960, will have reached saturation point.
Initially, Gatwick will take the Channel Isles service and will be used for planes diverted from London. Statistics show that neither airport is affected, simultaneously, by adverse weather conditions.
The Royal party arrived at Gatwick in a Heron aircraft of the Queen's flight. With members of the airport staff and executives of the companies engaged in the construction of the new airport, Her Majesty attended an inauguration ceremony conducted by the Bishop of Kingston, the Right Rev. W.P.Gilpin.
Later the Queen and the Duke toured the airport buildings and the rail and road connections that link the airport directly with London. Afterwards a specially chartered plane took the first hatch of passengers --- representatives of Surrey County Council and their guests---- to the Channel Isles for a short visit.
