  • Description

The Israeli government has released film of a ship which they say was being used by the Palestinian Liberation Organisation for a proposed seaborne attack on Israel. Government sources did not specify when the vessel was captured, only that the Israeli Navy stopped the ship at sea and brought it into Haifa Port.

SYNOPSIS: An Israeli military spokesman explained that the ship had set out from the port of Tripoli in Lebanon. Called the "Jihan" it was registered in Greece. The spokesman went on to say that the Jihan was used by Palestinian Liberation Organisation guerrillas as a seaborne base for a proposed attack on Israel. According to the spokesman the ship developed engine trouble and had decided to enter a South Lebanese port when it was seized by the Navy.

The Israelis said they captured ten guerrillas on board the vessel. Apparently a large arsenal of arms were found in the holds of the ship. In the past, Arab guerrillas have staged a number of attacks from the sea. Last years vehicles were fired at on a coastal road, and a Tel Aviv hotel was shelled in seaborne attacks.
