    HE WAS SPEAKING AT THE OPENING OF A FOUR-DAY MINISTERIAL MEETING OF THE CONSULTATIVE COMMITTEE OF THE COLOMBO PLAN, ATTENDED BY REPRESENTATIVES OF 21 COUNTRIES.

    THE COLOMBO PLAN IS THE NAME GIVEN TO THE COOPERATIVE EFFORT BY COUNTRIES OF SOUTH AND SOUTH-EAST ASIA, HELPED BY MEMBER COUNTRIES OUTSIDE THE REGION, TO DEVELOP THE ECONOMIES AND RAISE THEIR STANDARDS OF LIVING. THE PLAN ORIGINATED IN COLOMBO IN 1950.
