Background: Gina Swainson, a 21-year old beauty from Bermuda was crowned Miss World in London on Thursday in glittering ceremony that few people saw. A strike blacked out the live television coverage until a minute before the end, end even then viewers saw the crowing ceremony without any sound. For the British Broadcasting Corporation which had planned to transmit the show to 32-countries with a potential audience of 300-million, the strike came as a bitter blow. But for Gina...well she won, and that's what mattered. SYNOPSIS: Of the seventy Miss World hopefuls Gina Swainson didn't give herself much of a chance. She thought the favourite Carolyn Seaward of the U.K. was a certainty. But after the traditional swimsuit parade Gina was being hotly tipped as one of the front runners. And when the winner was named it was Miss Bermuda who stepped forward to receive her crown.
Five feet nine inches tall (175 cm) with 36-24-36 figure, Gina took the title ahead of Miss U.K. and third placed Debbie Campbell of Jamaica. Gina defied tradition by refusing to cry...that came later after she was besieged by photographers who clamoured onto the stage.
The New Miss World works in Bermuda selling wines and lists as her favourite interest 'Culinary Arts'. That includes tasting wine and there's was plenty of that at the traditional Champagne breakfast. In winning the title Gina earned a ten-thousand dollar first prize with another thirty-thousand to come over the next year. There's also the chance of lucrative modelling and film contracts.
