  • Description

Greek authorities in Nicosia have been making extensive preparations for the expected return to Cyprus of former President Archbishop Makarios sometime this week.

The Archbishop -- who fled to London after the unsuccessful military coup in July -- announced his intension of returning to the island after talks with the new Greek Government and Mr. Glafkos Clerides, the Acting President of Cyprus.

Workmen have been busy repairing the Prelate's offices and reception rooms, which badly damaged in the coup by the Greek National Guard.

Most of the valuable furniture and artifacts in the offices were either destroyed or stolen during and after the coup. The Presidential residence was gutted.

Posters announcing the Archbishop's return have been printed by the thousand and pasted up throughout the Greek section of Nicosia.

Mr. Clerides last week announced that the Archbishop would return to Cyprus in the first wee of December, but gave no date. Nicosia newspapers however, have given the date as Friday, 6 December. The newspapers said the Greek Government would provide the Archbishop with a special aircraft and a bodyguard of soldiers for his return.

They said a United Nations helicopter would take the Archbishop to the Presidential Palace, then the Archbishop would address the Greek community at a square outside his offices.

The Archbishop made a previous triumphant return to the island in 1959 after being exiled to the Seychelles Islands in the Indian Ocean by the pre-independence British administration.
