  • Description

At the northern outskirts of Montreal -- where the north river separates the main Montreal Island from the suburbs -- disaster strikes suddenly and without warning at a huge construction development. Just before workers were due to quit for the night -- ice smashed into a coffer dam in the middle of the river -- tearing it apart -- and flooding the area in which the men were working. The coffer dam had been constructed to provide a dry area for a mid-stream bridge base. The bridge -- part of a new super highway plan -- northward -- out of Montreal proper.

At least eleven men were reported to have died in the cold water of the north river. But some estimates put the total as high as eighteen. One of the survivors -- there were only two -- said it all happened in seconds. There was no time for escape. The two who survived were shot to the surface by the rushing water.
