  • Description

Iran says Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi, is responsible--either directly or indirectly -- for the disappearance of the head of Lebanon's Shi'ite Moslems, Imam Mousa Sadr. The Imam is the spiritual leader of Lebanon's one million Shi'ites. He disappeared mysteriously more than a year ago, while on a visit to Libya. The Libyans say the Imam left the country for Italy and they deny allegations they are holding him. Mr. Tabataba'i, the Iranian deputy prime minister, on a visit to Syria said there have been attempts to upset relations between Iran and neighbouring Gulf States.

SYNOPSIS: Mr. Tabataba'i held talks in Damascus on Friday (5 October) with the Syrian Foreign Minister, Abdel-Halim Khaddam. Senior Iranian officials in the Syrian capital said the following day that President Hafez Al-Assad was acting as a mediator between Iran and neighbouring Arab states. Some Iranian clergymen recently threatened to revive Iran's territorial claims to Bahrain. This led to strong protests by Bahrain and Kuwait.

Bahrain later asked a clergyman of Iranian origin to leave the country, because it said his passport had expired. Kuwait has also deported a clergyman of Iranian origin for alleged political activity. Since this meeting, President Assad has twice sent an envoy to deliver letters addressed tot he Emirs of both Kuwait and Bahrain -- in an effort to clear up the misunderstanding.
