    Seven Arabs, charged with conspiracy to murder after a twin attack on April 9 on the Israeli ambassador's residence and an Israeli airliner in Cyprus, were remanded in custody on Wednesday. (18 April).

    Four guerrillas attacked the ambassador's house, five others struck at the airliner standing at Nicosia Airport. One Arab was killed at the airport by security guards and another escaped.

    Six of the remaining men who were captured actually appeared in court in Nicosia on Wednesday. The seventh, wounded and in hospital, was under heavy guard.

    The men were also charged with carrying weapons.

    The men were brought into the hearing in handcuffs. After a very brief remand hearing, during which they cheerfully chatted with court officials, the men were taken away to await trial.

    One of them went under special escort in a separate car because of an arm injury.

    According to their passports, the detained men were named as: Hilal Ahmet Laoulha, Faisal Ali Al-Jammal and Ali Fadel Aljouri, all from Oman, Newaf Mchammed Al-Makky and Talal Ahmet El-Najafy of Saudi Arabia and Sultan Mohammet Al-Kassimy of Ras Al-Khaimah and An Said Abdul Rahman of 'Palestine'.

    SYNOPSIS: Heavily-guarded police vans took six Arab men from Nicosia's Central Prison on Wednesday to the central court building, to be remanded for another week pending trial.

    The prisoners, handcuffed together, were charged with conspiracy to commit murder after a twin operation by guerrillas on April 9 in which attacks were made on the Israeli ambassador's home and an Israeli airliner at Nicosia airport.

    After a brief Hearing, the six were escorted back to jail to await another hearing.

    One of the six, wounded in the raids, was given a special escort.

    Of the five men who attacked the airliner, one was killed and another escaped from the airport.

    A seventh man is in custody, but is in hospital with gunshot wounds. He did not appear in court.
