Background: At Mahatma Gandhi's memorial, Raj Ghat, New Delhi, where he was cremated, leaders of the Indian Nation gathered in all solemnity Jan 30 for the tenth anniversary of Gandhi's death by an assassin's bullet 1946. Among the thousands who placed flowers and said prayers at the Samadhi of the Father of the Nation, were President Rajendra Prasad; Premier Pandit Nehru; Vice President Dr. Radha Krishnan and Mr. Bakshi Gulam Ahemed, Premier of Kashmir.

Later President Prasad and Premier Nehru took part in a spinning ceremony-Gandhi often did this as a form of meditation.

Jan 30 is also Martyr's Day. Throughout the country people observed a silence in memory of those killed fighting for Indian Independence.
