TRANSCRIPT: Interview: What is the purpose of this visit?

U THANT: At the invitation of the British government, I want to exchange views on some of the problems which are of mutual interest the United Kingdom and the United Nations. No particular agenda has been set.

Interview: Will there be any proposals about Cyprus.

U THANT: Not specific proposals, but I will exchange views with the government. The peace keeping force is there as a result of the Security Council resolution, and so long as the Security Council maintains its present position and its mandates there is no prospect of a change.

Interviewer: What are your feelings about the build up of Turkish and Greek forces.

U THANT: I am very much concerned and made ad appeal to the three governments. We have received replies from the government of Greece and Cyprus, and last night my headquarters received Kutchuk's reply. I have instructed my office in New York to make my appeal and their replies available to the Security Council. I cannot give any information about the content of the replies at the moment, but have asked for the information to be made available. The report from the UN observer in Cyprus has been delayee as he has not been able to substantiate some of his findings, so the report... will not be forwarded to the Security Council at this stage. The substance will however be made available to the governments concerned.

Interviewer. United Nations troops have been refused permission to search military convoys. What is your attitude?

U THANT: I have made strong appeal to Makarios to permit United Nations forces freedom of movement, and hope that he will comply with the request.

Interviewer. Could the United Nations do more in Cyprus, for example, take a stronger role?

U THANT: If the Security Council decides, I have to comply, but there are limitations in the Security Council, it all depends on the more prominent members.
