  • Description

At a rally in the northern Italian city of Turin on Wednesday night (3rd April), Liberal Party General-Secretary Giovanni Francisco Malagodi denounced the extreme of fascism and communism.

He claimed that the two extremist parties were threatening to disrupt the Italian way of life, by proposing disruptive policies for "a society and economy without freedom".

Instead he advocated the Liberal Party as a safe 'middle path' for voters. By doing this he was echoing the main theme of the Christian Democratic Party's policy, which also advocates a middle course.

The Christian Democrats - at present providing a caretaker government - have been continually in power in various coalitions since World War II. They are expected to hold or increase their present majority of 39 per cent after next Sunday's General Elections, and to ask either the Liberals or the three-party Socialist group to join them in coalition.

By denouncing fascism and stressing their stand in the centre, the Liberals feel they greatly increase their chances for a place in the coalition.
