Mr. William Saxbe was sworn in on Friday (4 January) as the United States' chief law-enforcer when he took the oath of office as Attorney General, in Washington.
Mr. Saxbe fills the post left vacant by the resignation of Elliot Richardson in October. Mr. Richardson quit rather than carry out President Nixon's order to fire the special prosecutor heading the Watergate investigation, Archibald Cox.
Mr. Saxbe, who left his Senate seat to take over the job as head of the Justice Department, spoke strongly about the need for respect for law in his remarks following the swearing-in ceremony.
