  • Description

Leonid Brezhnev, the Soviet Communist Party leader, ended his five-day ice-breaking visit to West Germany on Tuesday (22 May) and flew home to Moscow.

He took with him written promises from West German Chancellor Willy Brandt of some far-reaching economic and industrial co-operation in building up Soviet industry.

Before the powerful delegation from the Kremlin took off from Bonn airport in their Ilyushin jetliner, the two leaders sealed their four days of exhaustive political talks with a ward handclasp. Mr. Brezhnev then grasped Herr Brandt with both hands by the shoulders and talked earnestly to him at close quarters.

It was the first time a top Kremlin leader had visited West Germany.

SYNOPSIS: The Soviet Communist Party leader, Leonid Brezhnev, left Bonn on Tuesday after summit talks with West German Chancellor Willy Brandt. The five-day visit did more than go on record as the first to West Germany by a top Soviet leader... Herr Brandt said it paved the way for a new era of what he called 'productive co-existence' between West Germany and the Soviet Union. At his brief airport farewell, Herr Brandt told Mr. Brezhnev that he hoped to visit Moscow in the near future.

Mr. Brezhnev's appearance at Bonn airport was one of the few times he was seen in public in West Germany. Most of the time during his visit, he was wrapped in a cocoon of security for the whole five days, and moved outside Bonn only once.... by guarded helicopter. The Guard of Honour on the tarmac was inspected by Mr. Brezhnev before he boarded his jet.

Before Mr. Brezhnev boarded the big Ilyushin jetliner for Moscow, the two men sealed their five days of talks with a warm handshake. The historic visit resulted in a lengthy declaration signed by both men aimed at converting cold war confrontation into economic and industri??? co-operation by both countries. Herr Brandt said the talks would also be good for co-operation and security in Europe.
