    ARMY UNITS TOOK CONTROL ON FRIDAY IN A BLOODLESS COUP PLEDGED TO CLOSE FRIENDSHIP WITH THE UAR AND THE NEW GOVERNMENT IN NEIGHBOURING IRAQ.IT WAS A DAWN UPRISING.THE SYRIAN FRONTIERS WERE CLOSED AND COMMUNICATIONS WITH THE REST OF THE WORLD SEVERED.THE PRIME MINISTER, KHALED AL AZEM, WAS GRANTED ASYLUM IN THE TURKISH EMBASSY.

    THE ARRIVAL IN DAMASCUS YESTERDAY OF AN OFFICIAL DELEGATION FROM IRAQ UNDERLINED THE CLOSE POLITICAL TIES LINKING DAMASCUS AND BAGHDAD, PARTICULARLY THROUGH THE IDEOLOGICAL RAMIFICATIONS OF THE ARAB WORLD'S ONLY INDIGENOUS INTERNATIONAL PARTY, THE BAATH (RENAISSANCE) SOCIALISTS.
