  • Description

Commemorating their 295th anniversary - and helping to lift the morale of the local population - Dutch Marines Dec 10 held a short memorial ceremony for fallen comrades at the military cemetery outside Hollandia, Dutch New Guinea. In attendance was Secretary-of-State, Dr Th. Bot, and Commander-in-Chief of the Forces, Governor Plateel.

This was followed by a smart march-past on the parade ground watched by crowds of Papuans. The salute was taken by Governor Plateel.

There have been many reports recently of infiltration into Dutch New Guinea by Indonesian "agitators". A number of them were killed and arrested during action by Netherlands forces stationed in the country.

Dutch New Guinea is a bone of contention between Holland and Indonesia, whose Government - led by President Sukarno - claim the area as Indonesian territory. A severance of relations between the two countries Aug 17 came as a sequel to Holland's refusal to leave West New Guinea.

Latest news on the situation was the Dec 15 decision by the Netherlands Government to allow - under certain conditions - a United Nations commission to visit the country.
