  • Description

ALL IS NEARLY READY IN LUSAKA FOR NEXT WEEK'S CELEBRATIONS. ON OCTOBER 24TH, NORTHERN RHODESIA BECOMES THE INDEPENDENT REPUBLIC OF ZAMBIA, AND FLAGS OF MANY NATIONS ALREADY FLY IN THE CAPITAL'S MAIN STREET AND THE INDEPENDENCE STADIUM.

AN ESTIMATED HALF A MILLION POUNDS IS BEING SPENT ON THE CELEBRATIONS TO MARK THE END OF 60 YEARS OF BRITISH RULE. SO FAR, 64 COUNTRIES HAVE SAID THEY WILL SEND OFFICIAL REPRESENTATIVES.

ZAMBIA WILL FACE THE USUAL PROBLEMS OF NEWLY- INDEPENDENT TERRITORIES IN AFRICA -- UNEMPLOYMENT AND THE NEED FOR MORE SCHOOLS. YOUTH SERVICE CAMPS HAVE BEEN INTRODUCED TO PROVIDE WORK, AND IT'S BEEN ESTIMATED THAT NEXT YEAR, THE COUNTRY WILL NEED 19,000 PEOPLE OF POST-SCHOOL CERTIFICATE LEVEL AND ABOVE. THERE IS ALSO THE DISPUTE OVER MINERAL ROYALTIES BEING PAID TO THE BRITISH SOUTH AFRICA COMPANY.
