  • Description

Israel's Ambassadors returned home from all over the world for talks at the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem on Monday (July 27) with Foreign Minister Abba Eban and other leading Israeli Government officials.

Although the meeting was described as "routine" by Foreign Ministry officials, observers confidently believe that the talks centred mainly around Israel's deliberations on the peace plan for the Middle East proposed recently by United States Secretary of State, William Rogers.

One of the major difficulties faced by Israel in accepting the Rogers proposals is the 90-day ceasefire which, according to the Israeli's would expose them to the risk of an Arab build-up of strength.

It is believed that the Ambassadors were being briefed to put their country's case when they returned to their Embassies.

But, on the eve of the second Israeli Cabinet Meeting in three days to consider the plan, the major obstacles in the way of Israel's acceptance of the peace proposals was reported close to solution.

However, as the moves towards the acceptance grew steadily stronger, a military spokesman reported that Egypt had launched its first air strikes for several weeks at Israeli positions along the Suez Canal. Israel claims to have shot down two of the planes.

The Egyptians were said to have launched two raids, in which eight Israeli soldiers were wounded. The raids came at a time when a majority of Israeli Ministers were reported to be ready to accept the plan following assurances from President Nixon that the limited ceasefire would not be exploited by Egypt and the Soviet Union for increasing their military potential.

Following the Egyptian raids Israeli jets kept up a series of strikes against Egyptian artillery batteries, mortar emplacements and fortified positions throughout the day. The also attacked Arab guerrilla bases in Jordan, a spokesman said.

It could be some days before the Israeli Cabinet decide on their reply to the American Peace Plan.
