TRANSCRIPT: SEQ 4-6: REPORTER: "Few of the refugees dare cross the border by day for fear of running in to Ugandan army patrols. But at night, hundreds have been escaping through bush and swamp, or in some cases by boat over the border that runs through Lake Victoria. The refugees are almost entirely members of the Christian Langi and Acholi tribes who've been systematically purged from their jobs, and imprisoned and massacred on a scale that runs into tens of thousands. Most I talked to have left relatives behind, and asked that their names be withheld to avoid reprisals."

REFUGEE: "I've had to run away because I've seen many people even more important than myself who are arrested....and killed."

SECOND REFUGEE: "I had imminent danger to my life, my property, and to my family."

THIRD REFUGEE: "They just come across you, they take you under false charges, say 'come and make statement'. After five minutes they kill you, they take away your car, they go and raid your house, they take away what you have there. This is exactly what is happening in Uganda."

REPORTER: "For obvious reasons, few of the refugees cross at official border points. Here at Busia, the frontier remains open and Ugandans who don't belong to tribes being persecuted are allowed into Kenya to buy basic foodstuffs that have now become almost impossible to obtain in the collapsed economy of Idi Amin's Uganda. Busia is also a collection point for refugees who escaped across the border in the nearby bush. From here, they embus Nairobi where they check in with United Nations and Kenyan refugee services. With thousands arriving here since January, facilities are already stretched thin, and Kenyan officials are planning to set up a refugee camp to cope with the influx."
